MASVINGO-A mentally challenged woman from Mucheke A suburb in Masvingo City has allegedly cut off an infant’s body into pieces and kept the rotting body for four days.
The 22 old woman allegedly stayed up to four days in the room with her dead child inside a plastic bag.
Masvingo provincial police community liaison and public relations officer, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the incident and encouraged that those taking care of mentally challenged persons to always monitor their movements.
“The accused person is being charged with infanticide but is now admitted at Masvingo Provincial Hospital and under guard. Normally under these circumstances the accused person will go through medical inspection to determine her mental state.
“If she is found guilty, she will be convicted but if it is established that she is mentally challenged she will be acquitted. However, in both circumstances we urge those looking after mentally challenged relatives to closely monitor their behaviour and ensure that they take their medication regularly,” said Dhewa.
Dhewa told The Midweek Watch that on April 28 Rosewita Mupfino (76) who is the caregiver to the woman arrived at the accused’s homestead four days after her last visit.
Upon arrival Mupfino noticed that the woman had smelly blood stains all over her body and a foul odour coming out of her room.
Mupfino asked her what had happened to her pregnancy to which she said it was an evil that was in her and she managed to cast it out.
When asked why she was smelling and had blood on her she said she was on period.
Mupfino was not satisfied with the answer and she reported her to Chikato Police, who attended to the scene and found an infant a dismembered infant in a plastic bag.
The woman and the infant’s remains were taken to MPH where the latter is getting medical treatment while the body was put in the mortuary.
