Woman (21) dumps newly born baby

MASVINGO-Panashe Tafirei (21) of no fixed aboard was arrested by Masvingo police for dumping her newly born baby near Mucheke footbridge.

Masvingo Province police spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the incident and told The Midweek Watch that they received the information from squatters at Old Croco buildings.

Dhewa said that on the 9th of February at around 12pm a man who was coming from the industrial area towards Mucheke footbridge heard sounds of a crying baby and upon investigations he found out that it was newly born baby under a pile of broken glasses wrapped in a maroon and green cloth.

He reported the matter at Chikato police station who attended the scene and took the baby to Masvingo Provincial Hospital.

The Department of Social Welfare was informed and are taking necessary steps take the child in.

Around 7pm on the same day the police received an anonymous call that Tafirei who was known to be pregnant and sleeps at the Old Croco pavements was no longer pregnant.

Tafirei was arrested and admitted to the crime.
