The 25-year-old Assistant Programmes Officer at Freedom to the Disabled Persons (FDPZ) has set her sights on winning the coveted title of Miss Albinism Africa, which will be held in Harare, in June this year.

The Queen for Mr. and Miss Albinism Zimbabwe is Angela Dube from Bulawayo. She contested in Mr. and Miss Albinism Southern Africa and decided to give Brenda Mhlanga a chance to contest in Mr. and Miss Albinism Africa

Mhlanga’s journey to the Miss Albinism Africa pageant began when she was crowned First Princess at the Miss Albinism Zimbabwe competition. This achievement, she says, was an incredible honor that catapulted her to the international stage.

“In 2022 I entered the Miss Albinism Zimbabwe pageant, which marked a significant turning point in my life. Growing up, I faced numerous challenges as a person with albinism, but this platform gave me the opportunity to inspire and instill hope in my fellow friends with albinism.

“Winning the title of First Princess was a dream come true. It not only gave me a platform to showcase my talents but also empowered me to continue advocating for the rights and dignity of people with albinism. I am grateful for this experience, which has empowered me to continue advocating for the rights and dignity of people with albinism, and to inspire others to embrace their uniqueness and pursue their dreams,” said Mhlanga.

Mhlanga’s experience has also taught her the importance of self-acceptance and self-love. She believes that these values are essential for building confidence and overcoming the stigma associated with albinism.

The Mr. and Miss Albinism Africa will see 32 contestants taking part from 18 countries. The theme for the pageant “Shining in a Rainbow Africa”, is a powerful reminder that diversity is strength and that every individual regardless of their background or ability, deserves to shine.

“This platform provides an opportunity for women with albinism to break free from societal stereotypes and stigmas. For far too long, we have been marginalized, excluded and subjected to discriminatory practices. The Mr. and Miss Albinism Africa amplifies our voices, allowing us to share our stories, challenges and triumphs. It’s a powerful tool for advocacy, raising awareness about the issues we face, and promoting inclusivity and acceptance. The pageant is more than just a beauty contest-it’s a movement. It is a celebration of our diversity, a declaration of our rights, and a testament to our resilience. As we shine in a rainbow Africa, we are shining a light on a brighter, more inclusive future for all,” she added.

The model who is a holder of Bachelor of Science Honors degree in Forest Resources and Wildlife Management reiterated that her experience and passion for disability inclusion had led her to pursue a career in modelling as well.
