Mutare based Manica Diamonds Football Club, are currently facing a tough run in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (ZPSL), having lost all four matches played so far this season.
During the opening of the season the Gem Boys as they are affectionately known by their supporters lost 0-1 to Simba Bhora, then travelled to Mandava stadium where they were edged 0-2 by FC Platinum. In their third match that was played in their backyard at Gibbo stadium the team was clobbered 0-3 by 2025 tchampions Scottland and just yesterday they were hammered 0-2 by ZPC Kariba at Nyamhunga stadium.
Supporters are echoing concerns that it is time for the current executive led by Masimba Chihowa, to step down, citing poor performance. Some allege that non-payment of salaries to players is a major contributor to the team’s struggles
Manica Diamonds FC chairman Masimba Chihowa acknowledged the team’s underwhelming start, attributing it to the need for an overhaul of the team.
The Mutare based team has a tough road ahead, with upcoming fixtures against Chicken Inn, CAPS United and Herentals. Given their current form, they will need a significant boost to turn things around.
Against Chicken Inn, predictions suggest a closely contested match with high probability of a draw. As for CAPS United, they are currently top of the league table with 12 points from four matches. Manica Diamonds have a challenging history against CAPS United, winning only three out of 10 matches, with CAPS United winning 6.
Potential changes in the squad could involve new signings or promotions from the youth team, but nothing has been officially announced. Interim coach Tafadzwa Mashiri emphasized the need for discipline and a solid game plan to escape relegation.
Former administrator Owen ‘Yaya’ Sango suggested that Manica Diamonds needs to assemble a competitive team with a mix of experience and young players. The club also needs to build a home-ground fortress mentality, which has helped other teams thrive.
With the team currently on 18th position in the league, supporters are anxiously awaiting improvements. As the season progresses, will Manica Diamonds bounce back, or will the executive face increasing pressure to deliver?
