Masvingo Province Veterinary Services Department has called on farmers to dip their cattle weekly and begin dosing early as the rainy season begins to protect them from tick borne diseases and promote early weight gain.
Speaking to The Midweek Watch Provincial Veterinary Director Dr. Krammer Manyetu said the rains bring increased risk of disease and farmers must be proactive.
“Start dipping and dosing now to avoid losses,” he advised.
For small livestock like goats and sheep, Dr. Manyetu urged farmers to construct proper shelters to protect them from cold and wet conditions that could lead to pneumonia.
“Goat pens must not allow water in and floors should be kept dry and regularly cleaned or replaced,” he said.
He also encouraged farmers to prepare two kraals for cattle to avoid muddy conditions that can cause hoof rot and other health challenges.
Dr. Manyetu emphasized the importance of hygiene, shelter and consistent care during this transition from dry to wet season to ensure healthy, productive livestock.
