The Department of Veterinary Services in partnership with Masvingo City Council and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has launched a rabies vaccination and awareness campaign.

The campaign in Masvingo Urban started on the 6th of October to the 10th of October.
Speaking to the Midweek Watch, Masvingo Veterinary Services Provincial Director Dr. Krammer Manyetu, confirmed the development saying the campaign follows the confirmation of three rabies cases, one each in Masvingo Urban, Masvingo Rural District and Gutu District highlighting the urgent need for preventative action.
“The campaign is meant to protect both residents and their pets from rabies while also promoting responsible pet ownership,” said Dr. Manyetu.
Dr. Manyetu urged the public to adhere to Masvingo City Council bylaws, which require residents to register, vaccinate and properly care for their pets.
“Residents need to understand their responsibilities as pet owners and be familiar with the council bylaws that guide pet management,” he said.
He also noted that improper waste disposal has contributed to an increase in stray dogs which raises the risk of rabies outbreaks.
“People who dump garbage carelessly attract stray dogs and this poses a serious public health concern.”
Manyetu warned that stricter measures may be enforced against residents who fail to comply with the bylaws, including the removal of stray animals to ensure public safety.
Residents are encouraged to participate in the campaign by ensuring their pets are vaccinated and registered.
