Veld fires are usually caused by an irresponsible community that fails to adjust to its current needs.
Droughts are persistent the world over because people have failed to realize the importance of trees, soil, water, grasslands, rivers, lakes, oceans etc.
So the world population is destroying the future of their children and grand children. If you look at the rate of veld fires right now in Zimbabwe, you might think you are in hell, daily we witness veld fires.
And what do we do as citizens, do we help in extinguishing the fire or we just look at its ferocity. Yes, big fires need fire fighters, what about a fledgling fire that is likely to grow big?
Do we give a hand or we just look as someone’ s problem. Currently the re-settled farming areas top the list of rampant veld fires. EMA is doing a lot in conscientizing Zimbabweans, but we don’t take heed of their message.
Today as l was boarding Inter Africa bus at Gokomere bus stop at around 10:40 am, l witnessed the highest misconduct by its citizenry, a big mususu tree near the bus stop was burning and nobody tried to extinguish the fire.
I asked the women vendors at the station if they have water to extinguish the fire, and they said they don’t have. I asked another resident, how many days did this fire take to eat inside this big tree like this.
And he said, the fire had been burning for the past two days. People are and were just watching. To make matters worse that big tree is just a metre from a Zesa power pole that supplies the very same community. What l did as a responsible citizen was to phone the Zesa Faults line for help.
The highest level of irresponsibility done by Zimbabwean citizenry, this time the Gokomere community takes the ‘ Mampara of the Decade Award”
