University of Zimbabwe strike is more than a month. The Mnangagwa government has turned a blind eye and is taking everything as normal. There is no effort to resolved the salary structures at the institution of higher learning.
The parents of students are watching as their children’s future is being destroyed by a reckless, unconcerned and irresponsible government. The citizens who must understand that University students are an investment for the future are also silent.
The people of Zimbabwe think that a university student education is for the benefit and concern of the parents. Every student at any college must be a great concern of every taxpayer and citizen. Although parents are the primary funder of their children’s education, taxpayers do in a big way fund the education system.
The government’s national budget allocate a very big amount to the Ministry of Higher Education. The budget to the Ministry of Higher Education is taxpayer’s money. This is the reason why every taxpayer must be concerned about the continued closure of Zimbabwe’s higher education flagship.
The taxpayers cannot remain silent whilst their money is abused in this manner. The Minister of Higher Education, Parliament of Zimbabwe and President as the Chancellor are not showing signs of responsibility. They are all carelessly ruining the education system.
The taxpayer is crying “Zvakaoma zvatinoitigwa nehurumende iyi”! Every taxpayer knows that the treatment of University of Zimbabwe strike is unprofessional and unconstitutional but they are folding their hands except crying “Zvakaoma!”. Instead every taxpayer must declare “Enough is Enough Zvakwana Selikwanile!” We cannot continue with a government which has a budget from taxpayer money unconstitutionally unresolving the University strike.
When a student is at a college, citizens must understand that a professional, high quality and well taught graduate is an asset to the nation. We want highly educated doctors, engineers, lawyers etc. These are a product of well taught students. The quality of lecturers is paramount. We don’t want poorly taught doctors in our hospitals. This must be a cause of concern by citizens. Citizens must understand that this isn’t parents’ priority. Parents of children want their children to graduate and thereafter a high earning job. Our interest citizens and parents of students are different.
The citizens must not cry “Haaa Zvakaoma doctor uri apo haagone chose!” We must demand as citizens for quality education for our University students. These are the very people who will drive out health, economy, judiciary, education, engineering etc so they must be highly qualified. We must declare “Zvakwana Selikwanile Enough is Enough ” for half backed graduates. We are investing lots of our taxes for the best graduates.
The government can fund First Lady Auxilia Mnangagwa’s nhodo kubika & mufushwa competition to the tune of USD$60million but can’t pay university lecturers a living salary. The same government is daily donating state of the art vehicles to various power retention strategic political groupings. This all show that this government has the money to pay lecturers a good salary but misplaced priorities rule Mnangagwa’s government.
The parents of students have accepted that after paying school fees their children can have no lectures. After paying for anything we expect to receive the best services. Why are parents silent? They are crying “Zvakaoma zvatinoitigwa nehurumende iyi chokwadi takabhadhara chikoro asi mwana uri pano pamba!” .The lack of accommodation at UZ means thousands of students are lodgers.
The parents paid rents for an unproductive month. The students without lectures are bound to drug abuse, reckless beer drinking and prostitution. The future of the students is being destroyed.
Parents cannot sit watching their children’s future being destroyed by this uncaring government. The parents must declare “Zvakwana Selikwanile Enough is Enough”.
Every UZ student must know that the government is stealing their future. The longer the strike the greater the chance that the academic calendar will be affected. This will mean a delayed course completion. As a student the strike is enjoyable in the first two days as they engage in free activities but as it prolong remember it’s your future destroyed. The discussions amongst students is “Saka hurumende haione here kuti zvanyanya.Zvakaoma zvatinoitigwa naED.” .These discussions are mainly centred on “Zvakaoma!”!!.The students must draw a line and declare “Zvakwana Selikwanile Enough is Enough!” we want to be treated with dignity, as citizens of this country.
The issue of the UZ strike must be treated as a concern for every citizen. This is no longer a student – parent issue.
