Unlawful possession of 54kg dagga earns man 15yrs

The Beitbridge Regional Court has convicted and sentenced James Vengesai (43), of Rukweza 2 Village under Chief Chirumhanzu, to 15 years in prison for unlawful possession of dangerous drugs on July 2 at Beitbridge Border Post.

In a statement, Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri, the Community Relations Liaison Officer with the Criminal Investigation Department confirmed that during a joint operation dubbed “No to Cross Border Crimes” carried out by security forces, a routine search led to the shocking discovery of 54.343 kilograms of dagga in his possession.

He was promptly arrested and taken into custody, his trial was presided over by Magistrate Charity Maphosa, who found him guilty and imposed a stiff 15-year custodial sentence as a warning to others involved in drug trafficking.
