CHIREDZI-Two young siblings from Kubanga Village under Chief Chitsvovani died on 11 November 2025 in a suspected case of poisoning, police in Masvingo Province have confirmed.
The victims have been identified as Winnet Chiturumani aged 5 and her brother Junior Chiturumani aged 2.
The two fell ill suddenly and died upon arrival at Chiredzi General Hospital. According to the family, the children’s mother, Emelda Zihura (32), had left their homestead earlier that day for the grinding mill at Maghedhe Matatu Business Centre.
Emelda found them playing near a stream close to their house and noticed that Winnet appeared weak and sick, prompting her to take the child to their aunt, Auxillia Sunamisei, who lives in the same village. Junior, the younger child, remained at home with their father, Calisnos Chiturumani (35). Winnet’s condition worsened while at Auxillia’s home, and she immediately returned home, only to find that Junior had also fallen sick, showing the same worrying symptoms as his sister.
The two were rushed to Matanda Maviri Clinic, but were quickly referred to Chiredzi General Hospital as their condition was severe, unfortunately they died upon arrival.
ZRP Masvingo provincial spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, said the children’s bodies were taken to Chiredzi Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
Dhewa said that investigations into the suspected poisoning are underway.
The tragic deaths have left the Kubanga community in shock as authorities work to uncover what caused the sudden illness of the two young siblings.
