GWERU-ZIFA Central Region Division 1 perennial campaigners, Tongogara FC aka Tongo began their preseason rebuilding exercise on a positive note when they dismissed hapless new boys Shark Masters FC  3-1 at their Battlefields home ground.

The pre-season encounter was one sided as Tongo dominated the proceedings for the better part of the 90 minutes as Shark Masters FC struggled to get into the game against the more experienced former Premiership outfit.

During the off season, Tongo lost some of its key players, Shelton Mhaka and Clive Rundofa to ther sister Castle Lager Premiership side, Black Rhinos FC who in turn had parted ways with some of their best footballers to teams like giants Dynamos, but their gaffer Calvin Maphosa believes he has enough arsenal to do well this coming season and gain promotion.

The army side outclassed the new comers with goals from the experienced boot of left back Mike “Pomba” Mavuto in the 30th minute , Kudzie Muchada 55th minute and Mac Millan “Rambo” 60th minute before the visitors got a consolation goal in the 86th minute.

Maphosa who believes they will do better this season after securing the services of some of the seasoned players who will lead from both the front and back respectively. The team is a mixture of seasoned players and young talent whom they retained after undergoing military training which the gaffer believes will add the much needed depth and stability.

“Our main target is to do better than last season and if honours come along it will be a bonus because we are working hard,” said Maphosa.

Tongogara finished the 2022 season on fifth position in the Central Region Division 1 which was won by Shaesham FC aka Construction Boys.
