MASVINGO-A one-year-six-month-old, Mike Baro died after a hut collapsed during heavy rains at Sibindani Village under Headman Madzivire in Chivi.
The incident occurred around 0300 hours on March 14 when the child’s mother, Joyce Marisa had gone to sleep in a round brick-built and grass-thatched hut together with her children and mother-in-law.
According to Masvingo Province police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, it was raining heavily during the night and the hut gave in, trapping two children, a boy and a girl inside.
The mother Joyce Marisa and neighbours managed to retrieve the children from the rubble.
The boy sustained a swollen head and bruises while the girl complained of waist pains.
However, the mother could not immediately take the children to the clinic because a nearby stream had flooded due to the heavy rains.
At around 0700 hours while the mother was still waiting for the water levels to subside, the boy, Mike Bharo died.
The girl is reported to be in a stable condition.
A report was made to the Zimbabwe Republic Police at Ngundu.
