MANDINDI, GWERU– Three artisanal miners were killed and two others seriously injured when a mine shaft collapsed in the Mandindi area near Sino Cement on Wednesday, local officials said.

Gweru district development coordinator and civil protection chairperson, Tarisai Mudadigwa, confirmed the incident, saying the bodies had been taken for postmortem.

He said two of the deceased were from a nearby village while the third was from Chirumhanzu district.

Local resident Respect Taenzana told The Midweek Watch that rescuers pulled out five people, three of them dead and two with broken limbs.

One of the victims was identified only as Mangisi, a well-known miner in the area.

Taenzana added that several others were feared trapped underground as rescue efforts continue.
