The Art of Hearing God in a Noisy World

In the hustle of modern life, we are bombarded by a thousand voices: social media, news, family expectations, and our own inner anxieties. Yet, for centuries, people of faith have claimed that there is one voice that matters above all others.

In Deuteronomy 20, we see God’s instructions for battle and law, but the New Testament brings us closer to the heart of the matter. Romans 12:2 urges us not to be conformed to this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds.   Why? So that we may discern the “good, acceptable, and perfect will of God.”

Is it really important to hear God? To some, it may seem like a luxury, but for the believer, it is a necessity. Hearing God’s voice is the difference between a religion of “rules” and a relationship of “resonance.”

Some benefits of hearing include, Clarity, It removes the guesswork from major life decisions.

Confidence, There is a unique boldness that comes when you know you aren’t acting on a whim, but on a Word.

Correction,His voice acts as a “GPS for the soul,” nudging us back onto the path when we stray into bitterness or pride.

The laws found in the Old Testament provided the “tracks” for the train to run on, but the Voice of God is the “engine” that moves us forward. To move from the permissive will of God (what He allows) to the perfect will of God (what He desires), we must learn to listen. The perfect will is found in that quiet place where our heart’s desires align with His.

Signs You Are Truly Hearing Him

Since God is a God of order and not confusion, His voice usually carries specific “signatures”:

Which includes, Alignment with Scripture, God will never tell you to do something that contradicts His written Word. The Spirit and the Word always agree.

The Peace Factor, Colossians 3:15 tells us to let the peace of God “rule” in our hearts. In the original Greek, “rule” means to act as an empire. If you feel a “foul” in your spirit (unease/clutter), it may not be God.

Thirdly, the Fruit of the Spirit, A word from God even if it is a correction will eventually produce love, joy, and self-control. It builds you up; it does not tear you down.

Hearing God is less about our ears and more about our “surrender.” To hear the “still, small voice,” we must first turn down the volume of the world. As we renew our minds through prayer and the study of His Word, we find that the “perfect will” isn’t a destination we reach it’s a conversation we walk in every day.
