Zvishavane-A taxi driver who accepted an offer to take passengers to Gweru City from Masvingo City for US$400 fee got more than he bargained for as he lost his car to the robbers who pretended to be customers.
Police has confirmed a robbery case in which a 29 year old man was robbed of a Nissan Salon car along Zvishavane-Shurugwi Road on 25 April 2024 at around 2300 hours.
Midlands Provincial Police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident.
“We are appealing for information that may assist in the arrest of the suspects. We are urging members of the public to be cautious whenever dealing with strangers,” he added.
Circumstances are that the complainant Allen Chirume of Masvingo was using his Nissan Salon motor vehicle registration number ADE 6864 as a taxi when he was hired by two unidentified man on the pretext that they wanted to be taken to Mhandamabwe Business Centre from Masvingo City.
On reaching Mhandamabwe, the suspects offered the complainant US$400 so that he could take them to Gweru. He agreed and they proceeded to Gweru via Zvishavane Shurugwi road.
The suspects then pretended as if they had made an Ecocash transfer and on reaching a point near Saironi Mine, Boterekwa, the suspects requested for a recess. While at the point, they grabbed the complainant, tied his hands and legs with a wire and at the same time threatening him with a knife.
They took US$20, a cell phone, national identity card and a driver’s licence. They drove off towards Shurugwi leaving the complainant stranded at the scene.
