HARARE- National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi has reported a tragic rise in road accidents during the 2025 Easter and Independence holidays compared to the same period in 2024.
According to Commissioner Nyathi, the country recorded 384 road traffic accidents this year, up from 286 during the 2024 holidays.
The number of fatal accidents dropped from 26 to 21, but the number of people killed only decreased slightly from 27 to 24.
The number of people injured, however, rose sharply from 159 to 178.
One particularly devastating accident occurred on April 21st along the Harare-Bulawayo road, where a Toyota Hiace kombi carrying 18 passengers veered off the road and overturned.
Four people were killed and 14 others injured in that incident.
Commissioner Nyathi also reported three hit-and-run fatal accidents that occurred in Murewa and Harare during the holiday period.
In these cases, pedestrians were struck by vehicles that then fled the scenes.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that motorists must stop, render first aid and report road traffic accidents to the Police,” Nyathi said. “We urge all motorists to be responsible on the roads and observe all road rules and regulations to safeguard human lives.”
