GWERU– The training of educators in the practical use of Smart Tablet Early Learning Assessment (STELA) tool, a new program focused on early childhood development (ECD) has kicked off in Gweru.

Principals from higher learning institutions across the country attended the STELA training program which started today.
The program is part of the School Readiness Early Childhood Development (ECD) initiative, which aims to improve the quality of learning experience in primary schools through innovative, technology-based tools.
The STELA tool was developed by a team from the University of Zimbabwe with support from the Roger Federer Foundation in 2019.
STELA is a digital assessment platform that helps teachers track and monitor children’s school readiness in ECD classes.
“This program is a testament to our commitment to ensuring that our children receive the best possible start in life,” said Professor Fanuel Tagwira, the Higher and Tertiary Education Permanent Secretary, who was represented at the training launch by his Chief Director, Professor Norman Takaidza.
The program focuses on the preparation of pre-service teachers, investing in the development of a skilled and dedicated workforce that will nurture, educate and inspire young children, Tagwira said.
Professor Tagwira stated that the introduction of STELA into pre-service training will have a significant impact on the education sector and ultimately benefit primary school children.
The program will also support the development of heritage-based children’s play materials, reducing the reliance on imported and potentially irrelevant resources.
Partnerships with polytechnics have been forged to help to mass-produce these materials for commercialization, a key component of Zimbabwe’s Education 5.0 strategy.
“This program is a significant milestone in our collective efforts to strengthen the foundation of our education system. It is an investment in the future of our children, our communities, and our nation,” added Tagwira.
