MILLICENT HUNGWE
SolidarMed Zimbabwe has joined the global community in commemorating World Liver Day 2025 on April 19.

The event is meant to highlight the importance of liver health and the role of nutrition in preventing and managing liver diseases.
“This year’s theme, ‘Food is Medicine,’ resonates deeply with SolidarMed’s approach to healthcare, particularly in supporting patients with non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including chronic liver conditions,” said NCD Project Manager Dr Alvern Mutengerere.
Through their PEN-Plus clinics in Bikita, Zaka and Chiredzi districts in Masvingo SolidarMed provides specialized care to patients living with chronic liver diseases.
Their comprehensive approach includes regular monthly reviews, access to essential medicines, and consultations with trained specialists.
“Health education sessions empower patients with knowledge about healthy eating habits and the importance of nutrition in managing chronic conditions,” he added.
SolidarMed’s commitment to supporting vulnerable communities with equitable access to quality healthcare is unwavering.
They advocate for stronger systems and increased investment in NCD care, recognizing that liver diseases pose a significant health challenge, especially in low-resource settings.
On World Liver Day, SolidarMed reaffirms its dedication to prioritizing liver health and promoting awareness about the critical role of nutrition in maintaining healthy liver.
Mutengerere went on to say as the organization emphasizes, “food is indeed medicine,” and nourishing our bodies is essential to preventing and managing liver diseases.
World Liver Day was established to bring global attention to the growing burden of liver-related diseases and the need for early detection and prevention. It was initiated by the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) in 2010. The day coincides with the formation of EASL in 1966.
The day was initiated as part of public health campaigns aiming to educate people about liver functions, common liver disorders such as hepatitis, fatty liver, cirrhosis and liver cancer, and the lifestyle choices that impact liver health.
