MUTARE- Police in Mutare have discovered an abandoned Honda Fit vehicle which was fully loaded with bales of second hand clothes in a chase by police.
Manicaland Provincial Acting Police Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the development to The Midweek Watch.
He said the vehicle is believed to have failed to adhere to precautionary regulations, lost control at a road intersection and rammed into a tree before its occupants disappeared into thin air.
He said the vehicle and the smuggled bales have been surrendered to the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) and may be used as exhibit in court.
“On June 23,2025 at around 1700hrs an anti- smuggling crack team deployed in Manicaland Province’s peripheral borders received information to the effect that a blue Honda Fit with registration number AEE 0342 in transit to Sakubva loaded with a contraband of second hand clothes was on its way from Mozambique into Zimbabwe with nine bales through an illicit entry point .
“The anti- smuggling teams tried to pursue the vehicle reportedly used during the illegal exercise using possible smuggling routes linking major roads.
“In their quest to locate the vehicle, they received a call to the effect that there is a car involved in an accident at an intersection in Greenside. Upon arrival, they discovered that the vehicle was abandoned,” he said.
He appealed to members of the public with information leading to the arrest of the culprits to approach any nearest police station.
