Shock as woman throws newly born in blair toilet at funeral

Mourners in Nemamwa were left speechless as a heartless woman experienced labour pains during the funeral proceedings and proceeded to give birth to a healthy baby girl which she went on throw into a pit latrine.

Esnath William (21) appeared in court facing charges of attempted infanticide after she allegedly threw her newly born baby girl in a blair toilet pit at a funeral in Village Muzvimwe, Chief Nemamwa, Masvingo Rural.

According to the state outline, William, who resides in Village Muza under Chief Makovere, Chivi gave birth to the baby girl at around 3am on February 6, 2025, while attending a funeral. She then threw the baby into the toilet pit and rejoined the other mourners.

The baby was rescued after Blessing Muguyo who had gone to relieve himself heard her crying in the toilet pit and alerted the other mourners. Mourners managed to rescue the helpless baby and taken to Masvingo Provincial Hospital for safekeeping and treatment.

Nixon Chamisa stood in for the state.

William is charged with contravening Section 189(1) as read with Section 48(1) (b) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.
