GW ERU–The Sheasham FC Social Soccer Tournament has kicked off today at the Chaplin high School grounds, with 36 teams from across the province competing for the coveted title.

The tournament, which is set to run for the next three weeks, aims to bring football back to the community and foster social cohesion and networking, according to Sheasham Board member Munyaradzi Mafaza.
“Sports has a unique way of bringing people together,” Mafaza said in an interview with The Midweek Watch.
“This tournament is more than just the game; it’s about strengthening the bonds within our community. When people come together for a competition, they experience some psychological relief.”
He noted that the tournament provides an opportunity to nurture young talent, showcasing the club’s commitment to grassroots development and improving the quality of play.
“The games are being played on a round robin basis before they move on to the knockout stage,” Mafaza explained. “This format allows us to see a wide range of skills and identify promising players who could potentially join our club’s youth academy.”
As the teams battled it out on the four playing fields, the excitement and anticipation were palpable among the hordes of soccer enthusiasts who gathered to support their respective clubs.
Mafaza added that the tournament, which is supported by various partners, is expected to be a thrilling showcase of the community’s passion for the beautiful game.
“We are thrilled to see the level of support and enthusiasm from our partners,” Mafaza said, stressing that the tournament would not be possible without their generous contributions and shared vision for the development of football in the province.
With the first round of matches now underway, the Sheasham FC Social Soccer Tournament promises to be a captivating event that will bring the community together and unearth the next generation of football stars.
The winning teams will receive trophies and football kits among other prizes when the tournament ends on March 2.
