Kwekwe- A 38 year-old Kwekwe-based security guard has been sentenced to 175 hours of community service after being convicted of impersonating a police officer and attempting to extort money from a commuter omnibus operator.
The convicted security guard is Peter Ndoma.
Ndoma initially received eight (8) months prison sentence.
Of the eight months, three (3) months were suspended for four (4) years, on condition of good behavior and five (5) months were suspended on the condition that he performs 175 hours of community service.
In its news bulletin, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said Ndoma identified himself as a police officer at Senderayi Roundabout in Kwekwe and demanded US$3 from the commuter omnibus operator loading passengers at an undesignated point.
“On February 19, 2025, at Senderayi Roundabout in Kwekwe, Ndoma identified himself as a police officer and accused the informant of loading passengers at an undesignated place. He then demanded US$3 to release the informant, which was handed over by Tafadzwa Mushangani, the owner of the commuter omnibus,” reads the bulletin.
After suspecting that Ndoma was not a real officer, the informant alerted members of the public who assisted him to apprehend and escort him to Kwekwe Central Police Station.
“The informant, suspecting that Ndoma was not a real officer, alerted members of the public, who assisted in apprehending and escorting him to Kwekwe Central Police Station.”
The NPA urged the public to be watchful of individuals attempting to impersonate law enforcement agents for personal gain.
