Scottland FC boost Masvingo Mayor’s half marathon

MASVINGO CITY-The City of Masvingo today hosted the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund Half Marathon, a charity event to raise funds for the community’s underprivileged.

A total of 320 runners participated in the event, competing in three categories, 5km, 10km, and 21km.

Scottland FC, a proud supporter of the event, presented monetary prizes to the overall winners in each category and they went above and beyond by awarding scholarships to the overall winners in the school category. Learners from Rujeko Secondary School and Kyle College received full scholarships, with Scotland FC covering their school fees for an entire year.

The club’s Greater Masvingo Supporters chairman, Terrence Mutandwa, expressed gratitude to all participants for their support of the charity.

“We are thrilled to be part of this wonderful event, giving back to the community is our mantra, and we’re glad to be associated with the Mayor’s Half Marathon for Charity. We thank all participants for their support and congratulate the winners on their impressive performances,” said Mutandwa.

He also shared the club’s plans.

 “On our calendar, we want to launch a talent search in Greater Masvingo, where we will be hosting a tournament for our social league, aka (bhuzas). We are excited about the potential of nurturing young talent in our community,”

He added that the club plans to partner with government schools to drill borehole, and they are working on opening a shop to sell Scottland FC sports kits.

“Currently, our jerseys are available in all sizes at Booties Pharmacy in Masvingo. We are also planning to use former players to help us scout for talent and build competitive soccer teams,” he said.

The event drew mayors from various cities, including Chinhoyi Municipality, City of Mutare, City of Gweru, Shurugwi Town Council, Chitungwiza Town Council, City of Kwekwe, and Redcliff Town Council, who attended to show their support for Masvingo City Council.

Mayor Councillor Alek Tabe expressed his gratitude to all participants and partners, including Scottland FC, Spungold Investments, Doves Funeral Services, ZB Bank, The Village Restaurant, Sunshine is Heaven Media, Honeycomb Supermarkets, and all other partners for their contributions to the event’s success.

“The funds raised from this event will go a long way in helping the underprivileged in our community, especially as we approach the festive season,” said Councillor Tabe.

The Town Clerk Engineer Edward Mukaratirwa echoed the Mayor’s sentiments.

“We are grateful to everyone who participated and supported us in any way. We look forward to continuing our work with Scottland FC and other partners in the future,” said Mukaratirwa.
