MBERENGWA-Sandawana Mine is making a significant impact in Mberengwa district in the Midlands province through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs, having spent nearly US$500 000 this year alone.

According to the mining company’s General Manager Godwin Gambiza, the mine’s efforts are focused on improving livelihoods and fostering development in communities where it operates.
Gambiza said the improving global lithium prices will enable the company to avail more financial resources towards corporate social responsibility programs.
“Most of our support has gone towards the rehabilitation of local roads. We have also channeled resources towards the renovation of Chebvute Secondary School block. We have also drilled boreholes to address water challenges in the communities,” he said.
He said the bulk of the funding, close to US$400 000 was channeled towards repairs and upgrades on the 60-kilometre gravel road linking Sandawana Mine with Beitbridge road.
The project which is 75 % complete, has been underway for the past three months.
Gambiza said part of the CSR budget has also financed the drilling of three solar-powered boreholes, each sunk to 100 meters to ensure reliable water supply for surrounding communities.
He said the mining company is mobilising resources to begin work on the 53- kilometre stretch from York to Sandawana Mine, fulfilling a commitment made during a stakeholders meeting chaired by the District Development Coordinator (DDC) Vafios Hlabati on 24 September, 2025.
This commitment to CSR is part of Sandawana Mine’s broader strategy to create shared value and promote sustainable development in the areas where they operate. By engaging with local communities and supporting projects that benefit residents, the mine aims to contribute to the long-term prosperity of Mberengwa.
Sandawana Mines (Pvt) Ltd, a subsidiary of Kuvimba Mining House, holds mining rights over 3,882 hectares in Mberengwa. Formerly an emerald producer since 1956, it has now shifted focus to lithium. Early exploration indicates over 100 million tons of lithium ore, with Phase 2 exploration underway.
The mine is developing a fully integrated lithium operation, with a concentration plant commissioning in December 2024, capable of 3 million tons per year, and set to double in future.
