Dear Editor
A matter of considerable public safety concern has arisen at the intersection near Ndarama High School and Target Kopje, particularly during the late afternoon peak period.
Each day at approximately 5:00 p.m., a significant number of learners from Ndarama High School congregate at this junction while awaiting transport home.
During this same period, commuter omnibuses and unregistered pirate taxis traveling from the Central Business District frequently stop at or near the intersection to pick up and drop off passengers. In many instances these vehicles obstruct sections of the roadway, resulting in traffic congestion and creating a hazardous environment for both pedestrians and motorists.
The convergence of heavy traffic movement, unsystematic passenger pick-up practices, and the presence of large numbers of schoolchildren renders the intersection a potentially dangerous location. The situation exposes learners to unnecessary risk as they wait for transport in close proximity to moving vehicles and irregular traffic patterns.
In light of these circumstances, concerned members of the public are appealing to the relevant authorities to treat the matter with urgency. Practical interventions may include the deployment of traffic police to monitor the intersection during peak hours, as well as the establishment of a clearly designated and regulated pick-up and drop-off point for commuter vehicles serving the area.
Such measures would not only enhance traffic management but, more importantly, safeguard the welfare of the many students who rely on this intersection as a daily transport point. Proactive action by responsible authorities would significantly mitigate the risk of a potentially avoidable accident.
Yours
