Masvingo City Council has announced plans to commence the construction of Runyararo Secondary School this year, in a move aimed at expanding access to education in the ancient city.

The development was revealed by Mayor Councillor Aleck Tabe, during a Masvingo Urban Constituency feedback meeting hosted by Member of Parliament Advocate Martin Mureri, at Mucheke Hall on January 17.
Addressing residents and stakeholders at the meeting, Mayor Tabe commended the MP for engaging with the electorate and providing feedback on constituency on developments.
He described the feedback meeting as a positive step towards transparency and accountability.
“This is a good move by our MP to come back to the people who elected him and give them feedback,” said Mayor Tabe.
The Mayor confirmed that following the completion of Rujeko Secondary School, the city council has shifted its focus to the construction of Runyararo Secondary School, which will be built near the swimming pool area, in Mucheke area.
He noted that the swimming pool project, originally constructed during the colonial era in Rhodene, was revived by the council last year as part of broader infrastructure development efforts.
Mayor Tabe also highlighted the council’s commitment to improving service delivery, particularly in ensuring the availability of clean water.
He stated that plans are underway to guarantee a 24-hour water supply across various residential areas in the city.
In addition, the Mayor informed attendees about the council’s cheer fund, which benefited several organisations with financial assistance amounting to US$20,000 last year.
He added that many organisations also received Christmas hampers as part of the council’s end-of-year social responsibility initiatives.
Turning to urban management issues, Mayor Tabe revealed that the council is working closely with councillors from Victoria Range to restore order and improve infrastructure in the area.
He said efforts are being made to construct proper roads, improve water supply, and maintain peace and cleanliness through coordinated stakeholder engagement.
“Meetings are being held with stakeholders which includes the land barons, councilors, the Minister of State Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira, to ensure that all procedures are followed.
The implementation will be done in phases to ensure sustainable and positive transformation,” he said.
In closing, Mayor Tabe urged residents of Masvingo Urban Constituency to continue supporting Mureri as he rolls out development projects planned for 2026, emphasizing that collective effort is key to achieving lasting progress in the city.
