“Embracing equity with diversity is a very sensitive topic” he said in his speech Mr F Shuro, on which we discussed various ways that can be implemented in different societies, religions, races, regions and nations in order to achieve equality and diversity in every institution.
Equity is the situation whereby men and women are given equal privileges to exercise the same roles, duties and/or responsibilities in any system. Diversity is the involvement of men and women, professional and non-professional, skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled, to take same roles and responsibilities either masculine or feminine in pushing the logistics of a system regardless of colour, creed, gender and religion. Equity only exist where diversity is put in place.
For so many decades down the line, the issue of gender equality have been a topical issue which usually trigger altercations and debates, some which end up being taken to Courts of Law and/or Legislators for discussions. Other Gender Equality issues are often taken to legislators for parliamentary debates and some bills are signed into acts by the Heads of States and enacted in constitutions. All these activities are usually availed after great investigations and varied pursuits into the so-called vulnerable lives of Women and Girls in all corners of the World.
Even if recommendations are made into law, in different constitutions, Gender Inequality still prevails and women and girls are victims of this form of injustice. Compared to men, equity and diversity is not on their side in various systems and institutions. Anything that has to do with women and girls just taken for granted and deemed null and void.
Gender inequality continue to affect women and girls due to religious and cultural beliefs. Men look down upon women. Women and girls are regarded as inferior and weak no wonder why they are limited to feminine roles only not masculine ones. During the Stone Age and Iron Age Era Masculine roles were meant for men but there are also very strong women who are capable of executing roles that are believed to be done by men only.
Long ago there was division of labour based on gender gender. Societies were also governed by powerful oligarchs in which the most influential men was exalted the Chief of the Dynasty. Women could not lead and this trait continued to run among mankind to date no wonder why we have very few female Heads of States under the sun. This was the genesis of gender inequality cases.
Women take very limited leadership roles in societies and institutions. Very strong and strategic leadership roles are granted to Men. The latter believe that women are very weak and they cannot lead but they are also human beings. The participants who attended the workshop also mentioned that in most families, able-bodied girls are not allowed to do masculine duties which are meant for boys and vice versa. These are the roots of gender inequality; hence equity and diversity are very difficult to achieve. It is inevitable.
We later on discussed the measures and recommendations that would help to create conducive environments that favour equity and diversity amongst people. We called for the establishment of various Women’s Affiliate Groups, Coalitions and/or Programs which teach the General Public about the protection of women and girls as well as their rights as human beings. Parenting Mothers and Fathers were encouraged to treat their children equally.
They were also advised to assign them same tasks without gender related favour. Every task at home, school, church and in the society should be executed with a unisex approach with equality. Children, both boys and girls should be capable of doing assigned roles, duties and/or responsibilities setting aside acts which portray elements of feminism and sexism.
In communities, women must be encouraged to contest for key leadership roles even at national level. They are also advised to challenge men in doing the duties that are believed to be meant for men only.
We are all human beings, hence women emancipation in all institutions and systems should be put into consideration and it is vital. This is the only way to achieve and embrace equity and diversity amongst people in their day-to-day operations
