GWERU–The River Valley Group of Companies has upgraded the main sewer line in Woodlands Park in a bid to end years of recurring pipe bursts and blockages.

The project, which is 80% complete, is expected to be fully operational next week following successful test runs to check for leakages, company officials told The Midweek Watch.

The system has been expanded with a new 400mm pipeline, replacing the old 250mm line, to increase carrying capacity and reduce blockages.

“We have carried out the tests run on the new sewer line and we are happy to announce that the results came out are positive,” River Valley Chief Executive Officer Ambassador Smelly Dube said during a tour of the ongoing works.

Dube further revealed that they had installed a flushing system that was connected to a solar powered borehole to enable frequent flushing of the system when the residential area experiences water shortages.

She said the uninterrupted water supply from the solarized borehole will help increase the water supply in the sewer line and reduce waste build-up.

Dube added that the water shortages had forced residents to flush toilets less frequently, causing solid waste to clog the main line.

She urged residents to stop disposing of diapers and other solid waste in toilets, warning that such practices would undermine the upgrades.

Engineer Adonai Torerai, who supervised the works, said the new 400mm pipes cover 300 metres and were laid at an improved gradient to enhance flow and minimize siltation.

Meanwhile, the company says it was engaging Gweru City Council to address the continued use of the bucket system in some parts of the suburb.
