CHIVINational Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner, Paul Nyathi has told The Midweek Watch that the Sese fatal accident was caused by a Fun Cargo that suddenly stopped and started reversing in the middle of the Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway.

The accident that claimed one life happened in the afternoon near Sese Business Centre in Chivi District on Monday at the 52km peg from Masvingo as the two haulage trucks that collided were trying to avoid a Fun Cargo that stopped suddenly and started reversing in the highway.

Ass Comm Nyathi said that a Toyota Fun Cargo vehicle stopped and reversed in the middle of the highway which caused two trucks to collide as they were avoiding the vehicle.

The impact of the collision caused a spark which burnt four vehicles on the spot and killing one person.

He went on to say that the other truck was coming from Beitbridge heading towards Masvingo with one passenger on board and the other one was coming from Masvingo heading to Beitbridge being followed by a Toyota Premier.

“The Fun Cargo stopped in the middle of the road and suddenly started reversing without giving signals and the driver of the haulage truck switched lanes in order to avoid an accident but however it then collided with another truck and the impact of the head on caused an explosion resulting in the Toyota Fun Cargo and Toyota Premier also catching fire and being burnt to ashes,” said Nyathi.

He also added that the Police are still carrying out investigations of the accident as some people have still not been accounted for.

It took more than 24 hours for the Fire Brigade and well wishers to put out the fire which engulfed 50 metre radius of the scene of the accident where balls fire were seen in the air from as far as 10km away.
