Masvingo – The Masvingo Province Referees Football Club has elected a new executive committee last week as the team prepares for the 2026 football season.

Brandon Mvura.

The elections were presided over by retired referee Collen Muringayi, a former chairman of FC Harare. Founded in 2023, the club has grown steadily and rose to national prominence after winning the 2024 National Referees Tournament held at Bikita Minerals.

Bernard Matenga, the Eastern Region Referees Coordinator, was elected chairman. He will be deputised by retired referee Jimmy Makwanda as vice chairperson. Commissioner Artwell Mazire was elected Secretary General, with Commissioner Thembinkosi Ndebele as Vice Secretary, while retired referee Arnold Ncube took up the position of Treasurer.

The executive also appointed key officials to strengthen the team’s operations. Former PSL Referees Appointing Coordinator Cainos Mavhuna was appointed Team Manager, while Division One referee Waken Machekeche was named Fixtures Secretary.

Eastern Region Commissioner’s Appointments Coordinator Abraham Phakiri was appointed Head Coach, assisted by Masvingo-based Match Commissioner John Madziva.

Former Greenfuel FC administrator Brandon Mvura was appointed Media and Liaison Officer. Mvura brings vast experience across several sporting disciplines, including football, boxing, netball, cricket, handball, tennis and korfball. Nyusa Madembo, a Class One Assistant Referee, was appointed Head Medic, while Gutu-based Assistant Referee Fambisai Mudukuti was named Marketing Officer.

The technical team also appointed reigning 2025 Pacific Storm Eastern Region Soccer League Referee of the Year, Robert Tangai, as Team Captain. Following the elections, the club announced a change of name. With immediate effect, the team will now be known as FC Masvingo, dropping its former name, FC Masvingo Referees. Speaking after his election, Chairman Bernard Matenga said the club was entering a new and focused chapter.

“Let us brace ourselves for a more focused and united referees’ football team,” said Matenga.

Team Captain Robert Tangai said he was honoured to lead the side.

“I feel honoured and ready to lead the team with heart and wisdom. We need to play as one and make our presence felt,” he said.

Secretary General Artwell Mazire thanked members for the confidence shown in him and called for unity within the club.

“Unity and shared purpose are key to overcoming challenges and building a brighter future for our football,” said Mazire.

Mvura said he would use his expertise to raise the club’s profile.

“I will ensure the club’s brand reaches wider audiences. WeZhira WeBhora will be a name on everyone’s lips,” he said.

With new leadership and a renewed vision, FC Masvingo is now setting its sights on continued success.
