KWEKWE-A dispute over bus fare turned violent on Tuesday after two men allegedly stabbed four bus loaders at Kwekwe Bus Terminus before being overpowered by members of the public.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police said the suspects, Vunganai Chitapa (22) of Village Mopanje, Kadoma, and Alpha Mhlanga (22) of Village Parker, Silobela, allegedly attacked the loaders after refusing to pay the fare to board a Phils and Pats bus.

The Midlands Province Police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said one of the suspects produced a Colombian knife and stabbed four victims, a 17-year-old juvenile from Rutendo, Redcliff, and three Mbizo residents aged between 23 and 27.

The injured were rushed to Kwekwe General Hospital where they were treated and discharged.

Mahoko said members of the public swiftly intervened and apprehended the suspects before handing them over to police.

However, one of the attackers was severely assaulted by the crowd during the fracas and is now admitted to hospital under police guard, while his alleged accomplice remains in custody.

Police warned against mob justice, urging members of the public to follow the law when effecting citizen arrests.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
