Prominent academia and University of Zimbabwe Lecturer Prof Boniface Chivore who died last week has been declared a hero, The Midweek Watch reveals.
A close family member told this publication that the late Professor was declared a provincial hero by government for his contribution in the education sector during and after the liberation war.
Professor Chivore was a seasoned lecturer in the Faculty of Education at UZ died at Rumwanda Clinic in Jichidza and is believed to have succumbed to high blood pressure and diabetes.
He was 72 and is survived with seven children, two daughters and five sons and 14 grandchildren.
Mourners are gathered at the deceased’s farm in Chipinda along the Masvingo Mutare highway.
The late Prof played a pivotal role in the transformation of the education system in Zimbabwe soon after independence, as he was instrumental in establishing “education for all “that wanted to address the imbalances during  the colonial regime in the education sector.
Prof Chivore joined UZ in 1985 and in 1993 he became a professor.
He held various positions at the University including that of acting chairman of the Department of Teacher Education, chairman M.E.D Curriculum Evaluation, Editor Zimbabwe Bulletin Teacher Education.
Apart from teaching Prof Chivore wrote modules which are still being used today in teacher training  programmes and has over 100 publications.
 At the time of his death, he was reviewing the ministry of primary and secondary education’s new curriculum as one of the ministry’s consultants.
