The biggest challenge we have is that we were taught to hide the truth. If a mukwasha is to come to pay the bride price, normally we go all our way out to borrow to cover up our poverty.
Varamu, vanatsano everyone at the house is expensively dressed…to show an unusual family life. The food which is prepared is of hotel standards….isu tajaira muboora, nemurivo usina mafuta.
If President Mnangagwa or Minister of Education was to make prompt school visit they will be shocked. The ministry officials always would notify the school of the President or Minister’s planned visit .The notification is about a month. The school head and teachers borrow to cover up. The classroom becomes artificial to students…vanoona chisionekwe.
I challenge Mr President Mnangagwa, Minister of Education and Parliamentary portfolio Committee on Education to make visits to schools without notice. These visits aren’t fault finding but to be familiar with the truth about the teaching-learning environment prevailing in Zimbabwe currently.
President Mnangagwa or Minister of Education will definitely resign after such visit. The situation in our schools is pathetic. The biggest problem is President Mnangagwa or Minister of Education are totally out of touch with reality in our schools.
Many parents rarely visit their children’s classes to see the learning environment. Parents think sending children to school is buying uniforms and paying fees. Parents must be educated on the importance of visiting classes whilst learning is taking place.
President Mnangagwa or Minister of Education or Parliamentary portfolio Committee on Education must declare the education system a national disaster. This will open up for donors.. international and locally to chip in.
There are areas which needs urgent attention to all schools especially in rural areas. These schools are even older than the President himself. This means they are no longer suitable for today’s teaching-learning environment.
A visit to any rural school will show÷
1) Leaking roofing…Zinc roofing sheets are rusty
2) Most Window panes are broken
3) Walls are peeling off
4) Old and dangerous roofing poles Mujuru wakaita basa kare kare
5)Floors are damaged
6) Overcrowded classrooms
7) One on One teaching impossible as classes are too large…The SADC is reducing teacher pupil ratio in Zimbabwe we are increasing
8)Some classes have no teachers as they are on leave and are not replaced
9)Toilets are healthy hazard
10) Sporting facilities are old, unmaintained and dangerous
11) Students have no textbooks
12)Rural students have no school uniforms
13) Teachers are poorly dressed as they can’t afford new clothes…kuponera mubhero
14) Chalk, manila, red pens, markers, drawing pins etc all in missing
15) A demoralized teacher and child
If President, Minister of Education and Parliamentary portfolio Committee on Education don’t act soon the gains of education will be eroded forever. This is our biggest investment since 1980 but the Second Republic is acting negatively .
