LOWER GWERU-The National Police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, has raised concerns over the spike of assault cases in Gweru District during the first quarter of the year.

Nyathi revealed that the district recorded 250 assault cases in April, compared to 216 in January this year.

The commissioner said this during a police-community engagement meeting with the Lower Gweru community at Makepesi Business Center on Thursday.

He described the trend as “alarming and requiring a spirited and united effort” to address the challenges.

However, Nyathi commended the district for making strides in the reduction of murder cases and gave credit to the community for their effective initiatives in tackling crime.

The data shows that the district recorded a decline in murder cases, with 3 cases reported in January 2024, compared to 6 during the same period last year.

There was also a decrease in attempted murder cases, with one reported in January 2024, compared to 6 in the corresponding year.

Despite the progress, Nyathi raised concerns over the increase in stock theft, emphasizing that it is the duty of every responsible citizen to create a crime free environment.

He warned the lower Gweru community against buying meat from street vendors and those without permits.

Furthermore, Commissioner Nyathi called for the traditional leadership and councilors to come up with village committees to help curb criminal activities.

Meanwhile, Chief Buninina Chisadza, told the villagers, police, and business stakeholders to join hands in fighting drug and substance abuse, which he said cause criminal activities.

He said there is a need to educate the youth about the dangers of using drugs.

“I encourage you to work together as the Gweru community in tackling the drug menace and criminal activities that have destroyed the social fabric of our community. We need responsible citizens who help in the fight against crime,” said Chief Bunina.

The Chief also highlighted the urgent need to eradicate harmful cultural practices that have been perpetuating gender-based violence within the community.
