This week, the people of Namibia and leaders from across the African continent gathered to pay solemn tribute to one of Africa’s most revered figures, Dr. Sam Nujoma, the founding father of the Republic of Namibia.

In a stirring eulogy, Chief Fortune Charumbira, President of the Pan-African Parliament, celebrated Nujoma’s life and legacy as a visionary architect of African liberation and a champion of unity and self-determination.

He emphasized that the founding president of Namibia was a crucial pillar of democracy in Africa and an advocate for justice and freedom.

“We are here today to commemorate and pay tribute to His Excellency, Dr. Sam Nujoma, a tireless Pan-Africanist, a stalwart of African liberation, and an unwavering advocate for peace, unity, and prosperity across our continent,” Charumbira stated.

Nujoma’s journey, from a humble village to the pinnacle of political leadership, exemplified the power of vision and determination in the face of immense adversity.

As the first President of an independent Namibia, he not only shaped the destiny of his own people but also became a beacon of hope for those fighting for liberation across Africa.

In the face of colonialism, apartheid, and entrenched oppression, President Nujoma stood as an unshakeable pillar of resistance, recounted Chief Charumbira.

His legacy extended beyond Namibia’s borders through his unwavering commitment to the advancement of African unity and his strategic support for the independence struggles of neighboring countries, including Angola, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.

“His leadership exemplified the true essence of Pan-Africanism and the spirit of Ubuntu—‘I AM BECAUSE WE ARE,’” Charumbira remarked.

Serving as president from 1990 to 2005, Nujoma transformed Namibia into an exemplar of democratic governance, political stability, and sustainable development.

However, Charumbira noted that Nujoma’s greatness was not solely measured by policy achievements but also by his personal integrity, unwavering commitment to justice and equality, and lifelong devotion to African liberation ideals.

“His humility, despite monumental achievements, and his faith in Africa’s potential remain an inspiration for us all,” Charumbira added.

In honoring Nujoma’s memory, Charumbira urged all Africans to continue building upon the foundation he laid, ensuring that his vision of a free, united, and prosperous continent becomes a reality for future generations.

He emphasized that Nujoma’s legacy inspires the relentless pursuit of justice and freedom that defined his life.
