As clubs fine-tune their squads ahead of the 2026-27 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season, which roars into life, anticipation is not confined to the pitch.

One Mbappe doing what he knows best.

In the terraces, another star is preparing for kickoff a man whose voice, passion and presence have become synonymous with football in Mutare and beyond.

Known across Manicaland simply as “One Mbappe,” Simbarashe Blessing Makono has grown into one of the most recognisable figures in football circles. Mention his nickname and it instantly conjures images of booming chants, boundless energy and unwavering devotion to the beautiful game.

Born on October 26, 1996, the 30-year-old never imagined that he would one day become a celebrated supporter. His journey began on the field rather than in the stands. Between 2016 and 2018, Makono turned out for local sides Greenfuel FC and Skyline FC before hanging up his boots. Life took a different path, but his love for football never faded.

As the new season beckons, One Mbappe says he is more than ready.

“Football is our life here. When the games start, the whole community comes alive,” he said. “We don’t just watch the match, we become part of it.”

For years, he was a familiar figure backing Mutare’s Premier League outfit, Manica Diamonds FC, before parting ways with the club midway through last season, citing a lack of recognition from the hierarchy. He has since shifted his allegiance to Mwors FC, where he is now permanently employed and continues to rally supporters with undiminished enthusiasm.

Unlike many who simply attend matches, One Mbappe views supporting as a calling.

“Young people look up to us,” he explained. “We must show them that football is about unity, respect and love for the game.”

Clad in eye-catching regalia, often wearing a jumper and painting his body in club colours, he has become a leading figure in the stands. His nickname, inspired by French superstar Kylian Mbappé, reflects both his admiration for global talent and his own electrifying style on match days.

“I believe football is not complete without supporters,” he said. “When players hear us singing, they gain confidence. We push them to give their best.”

Behind his rise to prominence, Makono credits a strong support system. He acknowledges the role played by Henry Nashisha, Terence Bingadadi and Donnie Kuzinya, who have stood by him through challenging times.

“There were moments when things were tough, but these people supported me from the day I began this journey,” he said. “Sometimes they assist with transport money so I can attend matches. They are very important in my life.”

Looking ahead to the new campaign, One Mbappe remains optimistic despite squad changes at Mwors FC, including the departure of key player Aboubaker Moffat to Scottland FC.

“This season will not be easy, but we believe in our team,” he said confidently. “With the right spirit and support, we can rise to the top.”

As the whistle blows on Friday, players will battle for points on the field. But in the terraces, One Mbappe Manicaland will once again take his place.
