Octogenarian drowns in Musuka river, Bikita

BIKITA-An 85-year-old man from Pambeni Village in Bikita has drowned after attempting to cross the Musuka River in Zindove area under Chief Mabika.

The incident occurred on January 17 at around 5pm.

The deceased has been identified as Chiwona Machangayi, a resident of Pambeni Village.

According to police, Machangayi was coming from Zindove Village where he had been drinking traditional beer and was reportedly intoxicated.

Later in the evening, at around 7pm, a passerby who was crossing the Musuka River noticed Machangayi’s body floating near the edge of the river.

A report was made at Mashoko Police Station, and officers attended the scene.

The body was subsequently retrieved and transported to Mashoko Mission Hospital mortuary, for post-mortem examinations.

The incident was confirmed by Zimbabwe Republic Police Masvingo Province Deputy Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Masauso Patinyu, who urged members of the public to avoid crossing rivers while intoxicated and to exercise extreme caution, especially during the rainy season when water levels are high.

Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
