GWERU-A 22-year-old man died after he was allegedly stabbed by a friend at a Mberengwa nightclub following an altercation in which he reportedly taunted the suspect over a sexually transmitted infection (STI), police have said.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said the incident occurred at Deo Night Club at Yorks Business Centre in Mberengwa at around 2am yesterday (March 25).

The now deceased, Elvis Gwatimba (22), died upon admission at Mberengwa District Hospital after sustaining a stab wound on the chest.

The Midlands province police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said Gwatimba had been drinking beer with the suspect, Jimson Sibanda (19) of Village Jiti in Mberengwa when the altercation ensued.

Gwatimba allegedly mocked Sibanda, claiming he had been infected with an STI by a sex worker.

Mahoko said the remarks angered Sibanda, who left the nightclub.

He allegedly returned about an hour later and called Gwatimba to a secluded spot outside the club, where he stabbed him once in the chest with a kitchen knife.

Gwatimba collapsed and was rushed to Mberengwa District Hospital by well wishers, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police later arrested Sibanda at a relative’s home in Village Munyamana under Chief Mapiravana in Mberengwa.

The suspected murder weapon, a kitchen knife, was recovered and is being kept as an exhibit.

Sibanda is expected to appear in court facing a murder charge once investigations are complete.

Police urged members of the public to resolve disputes peacefully to avoid unnecessary loss of life.
