MASVINGO CITY- The long awaited commissioning of an environmentally friendly landfill at Cambria Farm for Masvingo City has been further delayed due to the unavailability of senior Government officials.
The official opening of the landfill which is meant to end the garbage woos for the ancient city was postponed as the Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution was not available last week due to other pressing commitments, The Midweek Watch was informed.
The local authority said they will find another suitable date and inform the stakeholders.
This development was confirmed by Masvingo Town Clerk Eng Edward Mukaratirwa.
“Minister Chadzamira was supposed to be the guest of honor at the event but he got tied up by other government business,” said Mukaratirwa.
“We are yet to organize another date and will inform everyone after we get a confirmation from the minister’s office”.
The 10ha plot of land on Cambria Farm on the western outskirts of the city landfill is expected to bring an end to the health hazard that the old dumpsite Mucheke West posed to the city’s residents around it.
The current dumpsite is surrounded by residential houses of Runyararo West and Victoria Ranch and the two suburbs had to contend with swarms of flies, clouds of choking smoke from fires lit by people scavenging and the pungent smell from the rotting garbage.
