National Independence Day, Heroes Day, Youth Day and Unity Day are important historic and future generations’ aspiration days.
These days must unite us rather than divide us. Since Independence o 18 April 1980, these public national days have divided citizens than unite them.
National Public Days are not political party campaign days. Most Zimbabweans who are opposed to Zanu PF have snubbed public events because they are turned into campaign rallies. The Independence Day is for everyone not for a particular political party. However, if a political party regalia is allowed on such important day it means other political party supporters are not welcome. The Independence Day becomes a Zanu PF rally.
The liberation struggle was for freedom for everyone. The Heroes Day is for commemorating and remembering the gallant sons and daughters who died for the independence of this country. They did not die for Zanu PF members, but for every citizen of Zimbabwe. It is reckless, divisive and unstrategic to have a political party regalia on such a national event.
The slogans and speech by the President or any important guest of honour must be unifying and inclusive. The speeches must be inclusive, inspiring and focused.
The polarization which has been sown in Zimbabwe must be discarded. The government must move with speed before the country is plunged into serious political divisions which may lead to serious consequences.
