A 35-year-old man from Chigara Village in Chief Neshuro, Mwenezi, met a gruesome end his life after being brutally beaten by a group of unknown assailants near Tshovani Stadium in Chiredzi.

According to Masvingo province police spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, the incident occurred on February 6, around 0400hrs, when Lonely Sharukai, who was employed at Chiwara garage in Chiredzi, and his colleague, Kelvin Mphofu, were on their way to work.

Inspector Dhewa said Kelvin had advised Lonely to change route upon noticing a group of suspicious men, but Lonely refused, and Kelvin proceeded to his home using an alternative route.

At around 0600hrs, Kelvin returned to the same route and was met with a horrific sight: Lonely lying on the ground, bleeding profusely from the head. Kelvin rushed Lonely to Chiredzi General Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.

Inspector Dhewa said initial investigations revealed that the suspects did not steal anything from Lonely, and it appeared to be a senseless and brutal attack.

Tragically, Lonely succumbed to his injuries on February 16, at 1800hrs, while still admitted at Chiredzi Hospital.

The police has launched an appeal to the public to assist in identifying the suspects and has urged members of the public to exercise caution when traveling at night, especially using bush roads.

“We urge people to avoid traveling at night, especially using bush roads, and to report any suspicious activity to the police. We also appeal to those with information on the whereabouts of the suspects to come forward and assist us in bringing them to justice,” said Inspector Dhewa.
