Mwenezi contributes 100k tons traditional grains

MWENEZI-Mwenezi district produced 104 000 metric tons of traditional grains during the 2024-25 farming season contributing immensely to nutritious food security in the country.

This came out during an all stakeholders meeting held at Neshuro Growth Point last week on Friday which was attended by senior provincial and district government officials including the Minister of State for Masvingo, Ezra Chadzamira who was the guest of honor.

Chadzamira in his address pointed Mwenezi District’s pivotal role in ensuring the success of the province’s targets given its endowments and strategic location. “The Beitbridge-Harare highway, cuts across Mwenezi, Tugwi-Mukosi Dam, vast mineral resources, value addition plants in Rutenga, sugar cane and Citrus farming, all this makes the contribution of this district to the provincial fiscus immense” noted Chadzamira who also recognised Mwenezi District’s contribution to the nation in Agriculture.

“Mwenezi District and Chiredzi, you made us proud as Masvingo Province, by being recognised as the districts which supplied most traditional grains to the Grain Marketing Board in the last farming  season, traditional grains are key in ensuring food security.” acknowledged Chadzamira .

Mwenezi alone contributed 73 579 metric tonnes of sorghum and millet 30431 metric tonnes

Chadzamira set the record straight, highlighting the essence of the gathering. “We are gathered here from different persuasions, heads of government departments, civil servants, the private sector, church leaders and traditional leaders, so that we strike common ground in pursuit of the realisation of Vision 2030,” said Minister Chadzamira.

Minister Chadzamira hinted the direction which the nation is taking towards the realisation of Vision 2030.” It is important that as the people of Mwenezi you understand the background of Vision 2030, upon coming into power, HE President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa adopted a three tier system that will lead the nation to Vision 2030,” stressed Minister Chadzamira.

“l am happy that here in Mwenezi at least you know about the National Transitional stabilisation program, National Development Strategy 1 and National Development Strategy 2 as vehicles that will take us to 2030,” he added.

 “As Masvingo Province we have an ambitious target of turning the Province into an $8 billion economy, based on mining, agriculture and tourism,” explained Chadzamira.

Mwenezi Rural District Council, Executive Officer for Planning , Agriculture and Environment , Johane Chigarire presented on the achievements which the MRDC has made in its pursuit of development for Mwenezi District, ” Hon Minister as Mwenezi Rural District Council, l am pleased to inform you that we have made strides by drilling boreholes , renovating and building classrooms and clinics and also refurbishment of roads but our major challenge in meeting our targets is limited financial inflows” highlighted Chigarire.

In response Minister Chadzamira challenged MRDC to be resourceful. “As organizations, think outside the box, devolution funds alone are not enough to run the show. Think of other ways of raising revenue, attract investors, get in partnership with the private sector and that will make a difference ” advised Minister Chadzamira.
