MASVINGO – A joyous birthday celebration ended in heartbreak when 18-year-old Rutendo Takaidza drowned in Lake Mutirikwi swimming pool on October 12.
Patricia Hwindiri (43) from Mucheke D had brought her two children to celebrate her child’s 10th birthday.
Masvingo Province ZRP spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the sad incident.
At around 5pm during the birthday celebration, the kids joined other children in the pool, unfortunately Takaidza drowned during the celebrations.
Three brave men sprang into action, rescuing Takaidza from the underneath the pool and rushed her to Masvingo Provincial Hospital, but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
“This tragic incident saves as a reminder for the need of increased safety measures at public swimming pools,” said Inspector Dhewa.
