MUTARE – A 12-team Under-9 football tournament will be held at Chisamba Grounds on February 28, as efforts intensify to revive grassroots football development in the city.

The tournament, organised by Sebbo Mapara & Friends Foundation, which consists of Takunda Sebbo Mapara, Freddy Mudzingwa and Douglas Mutsotso as its directors will run from 8am until late and is expected to bring together junior teams from across Mutare and surrounding areas.
Mapara, a former Highlanders F.C and Tenax CS FC player, said the initiative seeks to promote football development at Under-9 level, an age group he believes has been overlooked in Mutare.
Speaking to The Midweek Watch, the UK based ex footballer revealed the importance of reviving grassroots football.
“I was raised by football, my life had always been football, and I felt I owned the game of football a token of appreciation, and i decided to engage my friends and form a football foundation,” he said.
He further revealed their plan is to educate young players on the importance of education, discipline, dedication, and drug abuse awareness since these days there has been a rampant use of drugs amongst the youths.
The foundation first had the tournament last year which was an honor to the late young talented goalkeeper who sadly passed away, Simbarashe Chigova Nkosi in Mutare
Twelve teams are set to participate, including La Sakubva, Young United Zimunya, SAFA, Reactors, Sakubva United, City Veloes, Chikanga United, Eastern Jewels Academy and Majesa Academy.
Mapara said the tournament will not only focus on competition but also on promoting education, discipline, dedication and drug awareness among young players.
Outstanding players will receive school fees vouchers and individual trophies, while participating clubs are expected to benefit from football equipment support.
