CHIVI-Instead of upholding the Nightingale oath, a nurse at Ngundu Halt Hospital in Chivi did exactly the opposite, he allegedly suffocated his girlfriend’s newly born baby to death.
Ngonidzashe Mugabe who resides at Muzenda Homestead in Guti Village under Chief Chivi will appear at Chivi Magistrate Court on February 10 after he was remanded on his first appearance facing murder charges.
The two are a couple although Mugabe was not the father to the newly born child whom he allegedly cruely ended its life.
It is the State case that on January 25 at around 3am, Mugabe’s girlfriend, Diana Rose Mudzingwa (32) who was pregnant started experiencing labor pains.
Mugabe being a nurse instructed her to lay on her back so that he could do a physical examination.
After the examination he told Mudzingwa to sleep after assuring her that they were not labor pains but that it was a normal experience with pregnant women.
However, the labor pains persisted until Mudzingwa gave birth inside the room.
Mugabe took the child and put some cotton wool on her nose and allegedly choked her throat.
Mudzingwa who was powerless due to labor pains she had just gone through could not stop Mugabe from what he was doing, but only managed to enquire from him what he was doing to the newly born baby.
Mugabe said that he was clearing some abnormalities on the child which he claimed would create future problems for her if left unattended to as she grows up.
Mudzingwa out of happiness and love for her new bundle of joy told Mugabe to dress up the child but he refused and allegedly continued to torture the infant.
He then took the child and dipped her head inside a bucket full of water saying that he was bathing the child.
Mugabe then took a plastic bag, some cotton wool and went away with the baby.
After a few minutes he came back without the baby and refused to talk to his girlfriend.
In the morning he woke up at around 7am and went to work as normal.
Around 1pm, Mudzingwa regained strength and woke up and went to Ngundu Police Station and made a report.
Mugabe was arrested the same day and confessed to the Police that he had thrown the baby into a blair toilet pit.
