MILLICENT HUNGWE
On 15 November 2025, at Morgenster Teachers College, Reformed Church in Zimbabwe Moderator, Rev. Dr. Ezekiel Baloyi delivered a powerful speech marking the centenary of Murray Theological College (MThC), a journey of faith, education, and mission.

He reminded the gathering that the story of MThC began in the rugged hills of Morgenster, where pioneers like Reverend Andrew A. Louw planted the first seeds of mission work in 1891. From those humble beginnings came clinics, schools, churches, and, eventually in 1925, the establishment of Murray Theological College, named after missionary Henry Murray.

The Moderator celebrated how MThC has, over the past 100 years, trained more than 250 ministers, evangelists, and missionaries who have served in Zimbabwe and across the world. He highlighted the Church’s inclusive heritage, training leaders with disabilities, supporting schools for the blind and deaf, and expanding its educational footprint across southern Zimbabwe.
He noted that the College, now under the Reformed Church University, has grown from offering a Diploma in Theology to a full BA Honours in Theology, preparing ministers who are spiritually grounded, academically strong, and socially relevant.

Looking to the future, he outlined plans for new infrastructure, improved student accommodation, and better resources to strengthen training for the next generation.
The Moderator concluded by honouring the pioneers, principals, and communities that built MThC, affirming that the legacy of 100 years stands as a testimony of God’s faithfulness and the Church’s enduring commitment to mission and education.

The Principal Rev. Dr. Simbarashe Munamati said, “Our milestone achievements tell a powerful story of progress, one that no person can erase.
“These developments stand as a collective testimony of our effort in strengthening and marketing the seminary across Zimbabwe, Africa, and beyond.
“The book we launch today, Until the Morning Star Arises, leaves an indelible mark and will remain our cardinal reference for generations to come.”

“We are grateful for the installation of a 6kv solar system for the college administration block, which has significantly reduced our ZESA bill.”
The Midweek Watch confirmed that, students are also benefiting from a 5kv solar system powering their internet infrastructure in the hostels.
He added that their 24/7 Starlink connectivity, accessible both on campus and in the hostels, ensures that students remain connected even when preparing their meals. This development alone has transformed the learner’s environment.
“The Seminary has also drilled a 60-metre borehole to supplement the existing Morgenster Mission water supply. In addition, we have installed a new state-of-the-art ablution facility, greatly uplifting our sanitation standards.
“We successfully lobbied for the Church to secure a brand-new Toyota GD6 to ease transport challenges. Our offices, library, and lecture rooms have also been tiled, improving the overall ambiance and professional feel of the College,” Rev Munanati.
All these developments have been made possible through the support of the RCZ Synod, the Synodical Administration Board (SAB), the GZB, the Commission for Witness, board members, staff, students, RCZ Presbyteries and congregations, and committed individuals in which they are deeply grateful.
For the 2026–2030 period, the Seminary intends to construct a new administration block with offices, a computer room, and a 100-student-capacity lecture theatre. We also plan to increase student accommodation by ten additional rooms and acquire a new 13-seater commuter vehicle to further ease transport challenges.
