MASVINGO-The Masvingo Boxing Federation will host its first boxing tournament of the year on March 28 2026 at Gibbo Boxing Arena in Triangle Chiredzi.
The first boxing tournament of the year will bring together schools and boxing clubs from across the province.
Participating schools include Mufakose High School, Terry Goss High School, Mutonhori High School, Tapudzai High School, Hippo Valley High School, Mtirikwi Secondary School, Chinorumba High School, Mutendi High School, Buffalo Range Secondary School, Malipati High School, and Rudhanda High School from Zaka district.
Boxing clubs set to take part are Triangle Boxing Club, Hippo Valley Boxing Club, 4 Brigade Boxing Club, Masvingo City Boxing Club, Rutenga Boxing Club, Showtime Lowveld Boxing Academy and Great Zimbabwe University Boxing Club.
Masvingo Boxing Federation Secretary General Severino Bvunyenge confirmed that school bouts are scheduled from 11am to 4pm while club competitions will begin at 5pm and continue into the evening.
The tournament will feature a full range of weight divisions including pinweight (44–46kg), light flyweight (46–48kg), flyweight (48–51kg), bantamweight (51–54kg), featherweight (54–57kg), lightweight (57–60kg), light welterweight (60–64kg), welterweight (64–68kg), middleweight (68–72kg), cruiserweight (72–78kg), light heavyweight (78–84kg), heavyweight (84–90kg) and super heavyweight (over 90kg).
Bvunyenge said the tournament is key in identifying talent ahead of upcoming competitions.
“The main aim of this tournament is to prepare and select boxers for the youth games scheduled for August. It is also important in promoting grassroots boxing and ensuring that our athletes remain active and in good competitive shape.”
The event is expected to showcase emerging talent and strengthen the development of boxing at grassroots level as the federation continues its efforts to build a competitive pool of athletes for provincial and national representation.
