The National Blood Services Zimbabwe (NBSZ) in partnership with Redan Petroleum collected 458 units of blood during a successful donation drive held on Friday 5 September in Masvingo.

NBSZ Masvingo Branch Donor Coordinator Michael Chakoma confirmed the figures to Midweek Watch noting the event attracted residents from across the city.
Donors began arriving as early as 0700 hours in the morning with the event that’s saw people donating until 1700 hours.
Of the 2 000 individuals who donated blood the whole of Zimbabwe on that particular day, 1436 were males and 584 were females.
The initiative is also aimed to raise awareness about the importance of blood donation in order to save lives.
Redan Pangolin Manager, Nyasha Muzenda, said the campaign takes place every Friday before schools open in order to boost stocks at the NBSZ.
“This initiative fosters a sense of responsibility in the community,” added Muzenda.
As a token of appreciation, donors received 5-litre fuel coupons for every unit donated. However, many were seen selling those coupons for cheap prices.
In May 2025, a similar drive saw 527 units of blood collected.
One donor, Dumisani Ndlovu from Majange Suburb, expressed his joy.
“I’m happy I donated blood today. I encourage others to do the same to save lives.”
Another donor, who chose to remain anonymous, urged drivers, businesses and community stakeholders to take part in future blood donation drives.
NBSZ Communications Officer Vickie Maponga urged citizens not to be afraid of donating blood saying, “To those who are afraid to donate blood: you’re not alone. Many people feel nervous the first time. But here’s the truth donating blood is safe, quick, and deeply impactful. In just a few minutes, you can give someone a second chance at life. Your one unit of blood could help a mother survive childbirth, a child recover from surgery, or a victim of an accident make it through the night. That’s not just donation that’s transformation.”
Vickie highlighted that males can donate every 3 months and females 4 months.
The success of the Redan Blood Drive highlighted the growing awareness and willingness among Masvingo residents to play a vital role in saving lives.
With continued community support, NBSZ and its partners hope to make regular blood donations a culture that strengthens the nation’s health system.
