MASVINGO-The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) has placed communities downstream of major dams on high alert after announcing that the country’s major dams have filled up.

In a statement in the possession of The Midweek Watch released on December 30, 2025, ZINWA said as of December 29, 2025,the national dam level stood at 78 percent as compared to 56 .7 percent recorded during the same period in 2024.
“The Zimbabwe National Water Authority wishes to advise the nation that due to the current rainfall activity across the country, water levels in Zimbabwe’s major dams have significantly risen, placing the country on a firm water security trajectory for the coming year.
“A considerable number of dams across the country have filled up while others are on the verge of filling up and spilling in the coming few days, if the current wet spell is to persist”, reads part of the statement.
Zinwa said dams that have since filled up include Mabwematema, Muzhwi, Nerutanga, Khami, Sadza, Somalala, Ngwenya, Insukamini, Nyawa, Exchange, Mananda, Nyamaropa, Bulilima, Antelope, Manyuchi, Mundi-Mataga, Lower Mjoni, Ngezi, Gonye, Mhende, Silabuhwa, Zhovhe, Beitbridge 1, Chintamutumwa, Zimunya, Bangazaan, Siwaze and Masholomoshe.
“The country’s top water bodies Lake Tugwi -Mukosi and Lake Mutitikwi also continue to record significant inflows on account of intensified rainfall activity within their respective catchment areas.
“Commmunities downstream of these dams should therefore be vigilant and be on high alert for potential flooding. People in these communities should desist from crossing, swimming, fetching water and doing laundry in flooded rivers while any water obstruction and irrigation equipment that maybe along river channels or within the high flood level areas should be adequately secured or removed,” further reads the statement signed by ZINWA head, corporate communications and marketing, Marjorie Munyonga.
