In a momentous achievement for the country, Mosi oa Tunya aka Victoria Falls, has been accredited as a Wetland City, joining an elite group of 74 cities across 27 countries, The Midweek Watch has confirmed.
This prestigious recognition was announced during the 64th meeting of the Standing Committee of the Convention on Wetlands in January 2025.
The newly accredited Wetland Cities include Argentina’s Trelew, Belgium’s Mechelen, Botswana’s Kasane-Kazungula and Shakawe, Chile’s Valdivia, China’s Chongming, Dali, Fuzhou, Hangzhou, Jiujiang, Lhasa, Suzhou, Wenzhou, and Yueyang, France’s Abbeville, Arles, and Hampigny, India’s Indore and Udaipur, Iran’s Babol, Bandar Kiashar, and Gandoman, Japan’s Nagoya City, Morocco’s Mehdya, Philippines’ Balanga City, Poland’s Poznan, Republic of Korea’s Gimhae and Mungyeong, Serbia’s Novi Sad, Switzerland’s Canton de Genève, and Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls.
The Wetland City Accreditation scheme acknowledges cities that demonstrate exceptional efforts in conserving and sustainably managing urban wetlands.
Victoria Falls, celebrated for its iconic waterfall and innovative conservation strategies, has proven itself to be a shining example of sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
Dr. Musonda Mumba, Secretary General of the Convention on Wetlands, emphasized the significance of Wetland City Accreditation, stating that, “wetland city accreditation demonstrates how cities worldwide are taking concrete steps in favor of their urban wetlands. By protecting, restoring, and wisely using their wetlands, these cities are enhancing their resilience to climate change and improving the quality of life for their residents.”
This accreditation is a testament to Zimbabwe’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable tourism.
The Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, is a vital component of the country’s ecosystem and economy, attracting millions of tourists each year.
The accredited cities will be officially recognized at COP15 of the Convention on Wetlands, scheduled to take place in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, in July 2025.
This global gathering will bring together leaders, experts, and stakeholders to advance dialogue and action on wetland conservation and restoration.
